SCHOLARSHIP BULLETIN – MAY 2013

ATTENTION:  ***SCHOLARSHIP SEEKING JUNIORS & SENIORS***

The following is a brief synopsis for which we have applications and/or information.  All of them have actions you must take before the due dates.  If you need more information, visit the Guidance Office.  Remember to allow enough time for your counselor to prepare transcripts and letters of recommendation.

WENDY’S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN AWARDS

Wendy’s High School Heisman recognizes outstanding male & female high school students who excel in:

•      Academics
•      Athletics
•      Leadership

ELIGIBILITY: 

•      Any student who will be a senior in the Class of 2014
•      Has at least a “B” average
•      Participates in at least one school-sponsored sport

KATE STERLING BUNNELL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Financial assistance is available under the Kate Sterling Bunnell Scholarship Fund to help Stratford students further their education.  Students who are good citizens and who have financial need are encouraged to apply.  Applicants do not need to be at the top of the class to be considered, nor do they need to absolutely destitute for consideration.  These scholarships vary in amount, according to need, and are renewable each year. 

APPLICATION PROCEDURES:

1.      Applicants must pick up their applications in person from Ms.  Matto in the Guidance office.
2.      The following forms and documents must be completed/enclosed

•      Application
•      Autobiographical essay & photograph
•      Activity sheet – listing all school & extracurricular activities
•      Student Aid Report (SAR) from the FAFSA
•      Transcript – (receive an unofficial copy of your report from Ms. Matto) when you pick up the application
•      Scholarships, awards and other financial aid letters – (copies of all awards you have received).

3.      The packet must be returned to the First Congregational Church office; 2301 Main Street, Stratford, no later than 3 p.m., May 24, 2013!

Abbott & Fenner Scholarship Program
Award: $1,000
Eligibility: Student must submit an essay on the topic specified at: http://www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm

AES Engineering Scholarship
Award: $500.00
Eligibility: This scholarship is offered to students based on character evaluation.  For more information and essay questions visit:  http://www.aesengineers.com/scholarships.htm

Anderson University Scholarship Competitions
Award: $3,500 - $6,000
Eligibility: Scholarships are available for students interested in attending Anderson University and majoring in either theatre, visual arts or music.  To register for competitions please visit: www.andersonuniversity.edu

Cape Verdean Women’s Social Club Scholarship
Award: Unspecified
Eligibility: Scholarships are available to applicants of Cape Verdean descent, at least on the part of one parent.  The applicant must reside in Fairfield County and be accepted as a full-time student at a specific college.  Financial need and scholastic achievement (2.0 GPA, C/75 average) will also be considered.

CONN HAHRO- John Kelly Memorial Scholarship
Award:  $3,500 (3)
Eligibility: Graduating seniors who reside in public housing or in a household that participates in the Section 8 program. 
Deadline: June 5, 2013

 

Howard Knepler Scholarship
Award: $250.00 (2)
Eligibility: A graduating high school senior who intends to continue their education beyond high school, has participated in the Sterling House athletic programs as a player, referee or coach.
Deadline: June 1, 2013




Kate Sterling Bunnell Scholarship Fund
Award: $500 - $2,500
Eligibility: Students who are good citizens and have financial need.  Applications are available in Guidance.

New Haven Pride Center David Knapp Scholarship
Award: $500 (2)
Eligibility: This scholarship is for a student whose contributions have made an impact on the LGBT community.   For more information please visit: newhavenpridecenter.org

The Shawn Carter (Jay-Z) Scholarship Fund
Award: unspecified
Eligibility: A high school senior who is pursuing studies in vocational or trade school.  The student must have a 2.0 GPA or better.  To apply go to: http://www.shawncartersf.com/apply

Society of Women Engineers Scholarship
Award: $1,000 per year
Eligibility: A female senior who is planning to pursue a baccalaureate degree in engineering or computer science and is enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering programs.  To find a list of ABET-accredited programs go to: http://www.abet.org/ and click on “find an accredited program.” To download scholarship brochure: http://societyofwomenengineers.swe.org and click on scholarships, and then on “view the scholarship brochure.”

Starwood Scholarship Fund
Award: $500.00
Eligibility: The student must be United States citizen, current high school senior and be accepted and enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university, or vocational/technical school. 
Deadline: May 25, 2013

 

St. John’s University Scholarships
Awards: $1,000 - $10,000 per year
Eligibility: Several types of scholarships are available for students planning on attending St. John’s, depending on academics, financial need, service, etc.  For more information visit: www.stjohns.edu/scholarships.

ThetaTau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc. Scholarship
Award: unspecified
Eligibility: A graduating senior who ranks in the top 30% of her/his class and has financial need.  The student should be planning on attending an institution of higher education in a 2,3 or 4 year program, be active in the community and have extracurricular activities. 
Deadline: May 24, 2013 

 

The Triangle Community Center Scholarship Fund
Award: $1,000
Eligibility: This scholarship is open to all gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning students who will be enrolled in a vocational or undergraduate program.
Deadline: May 17, 2013

 

Viking Construction Education Scholarship
Award: $1,000 (per year for up to four years)
Eligibility: A senior who is working towards a major in the construction industry, with a minimum 2.7 GPA.
Deadline: June 3, 2013

 

Vincent Vizzo Memorial Scholarship
Award: $1,000 (2)
Eligibility: A high school senior of Italian descent, that has a GPA of 2.7 or better and be planning on attending a two or four year college or university or post high school vocational training.  The student must participate in extra-curricular activities, show good moral character, citizenship and commitment to the community. 
Deadline:  May 18, 2013


West Indian- American Association of Greater Bridgeport
Award: $750.00 - $1,000
Eligibility: Seniors graduating in 2013, of West Indian heritage (or be child or grandchild of person born in West Indies) and be accepted in four year college/university to pursue a bachelor’s degree.  Financial need and academic excellence are taken into consideration.  Deadline: May 31, 2013
